Summary:
Split sheets are the boring part of the music business—but they protect your hard work. Without a completed split sheet, your music is at risk of lost money and missed opportunities. For example, your song could be passed over for a commercial sync deal simply because your paperwork isn’t in order.
This problem is common. Many artists skip split sheets because they’re:
Time-consuming
Tedious
Easy to overlook
Not clearly explained
That’s what inspired me to create the Smart SplitSheet—a faster, simpler way to complete split sheets without friction. Click here to demo this app now.
What's the Smart SplitSheet?
The Smart SplitSheet helps you:
Complete split sheets quickly
Capture contributor signatures on-site
Export a clean PDF for your records
Secure exports with cryptographic fingerprinting
It’s built to remove friction from a necessary part of the music business.
How It Works (3 Steps)
1. Input Your Track & ISRC
Your ISRC is a unique ID used to track where your music is played and monetized.
You can get your ISRC from your distributor, such as UnitedMasters.
2. Add Contributors
Add each person who contributed to the track and enter:
Name
Email
PRO
IPI number
Publishing percentage
Master percentage
Role on the track
Once their information is complete, have them sign the agreement. If a contributor is remote, you can use a third-party app to collect their digital signature.
What's a PRO?
A Performing Rights Organization (PRO) represents your rights as a music creator when your work is performed publicly.
PROs:
Assign you an IPI number
Collect and distribute performance royalties
Require ISRCs to track usage accurately
Popular PROs include:
ASCAP
BMI
SongTrust
Signing up is free, and it’s an important step before releasing music.
Important Notes:
You still need a split sheet even if you created the track solo
Proof of ownership is required for publishers and commercial sync opportunities
Every contributor must sign the agreement
You can export without a signature, but all signatures must be collected
This protects everyone involved.
3. Export Your Agreement
Review your split agreement carefully, then export a copy for your records.
If any signatures are missing, collect them via:
Print
Third-party digital signature apps
It’s standard practice for every contributor to sign.
